Easy Free Domain Names With Box.tl – No Ads, No Credit Card!
April 27, 2011
Here is a quick summary of what I found on this new registry: http://box.tl
It turns out that free domain names are easy to setup, and provide an excellent alternative to .com or .net domains. Of course, with over 60 million .com domains registered, it is difficult to find good domains available.
This is why I like registries like box.tl. They are a great help for any webmaster . And since they are free, there is just no reason not to use them!
It is already so easy to have free hosting, free website building, html templates, etc… Free domains are just the missing link to a 100% free internet.
On box.tl for example, you can register free domains and keep them for free for life. Anyone can register up to 5 free domains per account, but you can always make a small donation and become a VIP member for life, allowing you to have a lot more domains. This is an option so you really don’t have to if you only need 5 domains or less.
For each domain, you can immediately set up you full DNS control: URL forwarding, nameserver control, and zone records control. This works with any hosting service (free or paid)
There is no need to give any credit card number. Just your email address and a few details and you’re set. The registration itself takes a few minutes but goes smootly and everything is clearly explained.
From there, you are free to use your domain just like any other .com or .net address. For example, I set up bloganything.box.tl in under 5 minutes and was able to use it as a URL forwarding address for this blog. For an inexperienced user like me, it is probably a better option than a .com address since I can try and fail as many times as I want. The support seems to be working too, and I did get an answer to my questions within 24h.
Anyway, free is always good, although it is unclear how the site makes money. Of course they have some ads on their front page, but I am told those will disappear soon.
On the back end, the website runs on a software called DNSeed (http://www.dnseed.com) which is made to allow you set up and run your own registry. A couple of other sites are running it at the moment and more are probably on the way, since the company is selling the script. Sounds a bit technical but definitely a great way to expand a short domain name into a registry with thousands of free domains under it.
The box.tl site is still quite recent so many cool domains are still available: download.box.tl ; cardboard.box.tl ; apple.box.tl ; tivo.box.tl ; free.box.tl ; domain.box.tl ; beat.box.tl
which one will you claim?
